The Curanderx Toolkit: Reclaiming Ancestral Latinx Plant Medicine and Rituals for Healing

Dear Ancestral Apothecary Community,

I am excited to share that my first book, The Curanderx Toolkit:  Reclaiming Ancestral Latinx Plant Medicine and Rituals for Healing , will be available in bookstores on July 12th through Huchiun/Berkeley based non-profit press, Hey Day Books.

This book is based on the class of the same name that has been offered through Ancestral Apothecary for the past ten years.   I include chapters on the history of curanderismo, herbal gardening, herbal allies, medicine making, limpias and dream work.  I also had the incredible blessing to spotlight thirteen curanderx whom are my maestras, students, friends and colleagues.

Stay tuned for more information on book events.  I will be travelling to the Bay Area to celebrate the book launch in mid-July, and later in the summer plan on coming to Southern California.  Please contact me if you would like to host either an in person or online book event.

The book is available now for pre-orders.  Hey Day is offering a special 30% discount through the end of August by using the code LA MEDICINA .

I am infinitely grateful to the keepers of this tradition who kept nuestra medicina alive during the past five hundred years of colonization, often at risk to their own lives.  I thank my ancestors, maestras, maestros, and all of my compañerx who have contributed to this flowering movement of our ancestral medicine.

I pray that our ancestral medicine practices can support the strength, healing, and resilience of each of us, our families and beloved communities.  We need our ancestral medicine more than ever in the face of all the traumas/sustos we are experiencing, such as the recent mass shootings in Buffalo and Ulvade, or the tragedies caused by climate catastrophe, like the devastating fires we are currently experiencing in New Mexico.

As great curandera and author Elena Avila wrote, “We can’t avoid having traumas in our lives, but the way that we recover from shocks and misfortunes has everything to do with how we are able to maintain the health of our soul.”
