The Curanderx Toolkit class was first dreamed up by our founder, Atava Garcia Swiecicki, in 2011. A long quest to reconnect with her ancestral medicine led Atava to study and apprentice with many traditional healers including Mexican curanderas Estela Roman and Doña Enriqueta Contereas. Atava was inspired to create an herbal medicine class informed by a Latinx cultural perspective, which she felt was missing from most conventional herbal medicine schools. She wanted to create a learning space to empower people, especially communities of color, to take care of their own health by learning basic self-care practices of curanderismo.
This year we celebrate the launch of Atava’s book based on the class, called The Curanderx Toolkit, Reclaiming Ancestral Herbal Medicine and Rituals for Healing. This class will include teachings on herbal medicine making, self-limpias, baños, and ancestral dreamwork. We will also invite special guest maestrx who are spotlighted in the book to share their specialties and perspectives on curanderismo and healing. This class is centered on BIPOC and QTBIPOC folx but open to people of all backgrounds and genders.
