My love poem to plants

By Atava Garcia Swiecicki, Founder of Ancestral Apothecary

Dear beloved plant friends,
Thank you
For your unconditional love
For always sharing with me
For always offering your support
For continuing to help us humans
Even when we’ve forgotten how to respect you.

Thank you for growing in my garden
For thriving even in drought
For coming back every spring
For persisting through weeds
For flowering
For offering yourselves
To bees
To butterflies
To birds.

Thank you for your special scents.
Sweet citrus of lemon balm
Pungency of yarrow
Savoriness of rosemary
Spiciness of thyme, oregano, marjoram, basil.

Thank you for your beauty.
Golden marigolds
Pink trumpet flowers of tobacco
Bold magenta bougainvillea
Bright orange and yellow nasturtium.

Thank you for your medicine.
For nourishing my body
For calming my nerves
For relaxing the tension in my muscles
For helping me to sleep
For fighting that cold
For healing all the cuts, scrapes, bites and wounds
For soothing my sadness
Depression
Heartbreak.

You, my dear plant friends, are like a big hug
A cozy blanket
A hot cup of tea
A smile
A love letter
A familiar face
A lullaby.

I sing praises to each of your names
Each one growing in my garden.

Yarrow
Tobacco
Bougainvillea
Oregano
Ruda
Thyme
Sage
Mugwort
Echinacea
Lavender
Calendula
Chamomile
Fennel
Aralia
St John’s Wort
Passionflower
Scullcap
Ashwagandha
Pericón
Bee Balm
Rosemary
Agrimony
Lemon Balm
Basil

I call you these names
Yet what do you call yourselves?

Do you have a name for me?

Thank you
My beloved plant friends.
